B Sharp Technologies announces winners of healthcare social media contest

B Sharp Technologies is pleased to announced that Quinte Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine is the winner of the first round of its B Social funding program. This program provides cash incentives and other prizes to accelerate adoption and use of social media by Canadian healthcare organizations.

Located in Belleville Ontario, Quinte Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine specializes in child and youth health. A dedicated team of healthcare professionals led by Dr. Paul Dempsey diagnoses and treats acute medical problems, monitors and coordinates the care of complex chronic medical problems and specialized needs, and follows up and monitors the development of premature infants and patients at risk.

In keeping with Quinte Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine’s innovative approach to delivering healthcare services, Dr. Dempsey and his team have enthusiastically embraced social media as way to connect with the families that they serve.  “Our goal,” says Dr. Dempsey “is to extend the Quinte Pediatrics experience far beyond a consultation appointment or visit to our Acute Care Clinic.”

Having already established a social media presence using tools such as Twitter, Facebook, FourSquare, and blogging, Quinte Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine plans to use its $2,500 first prize to purchase software and equipment that will allow them create quality video content in-house. “With video we will be able to give our audiences a personal, interactive, and ‘behind-the scenes’ view of Quinte Pediatrics,” explains Sara Hamil, Director of Social Media and Communication.  “We envision showing our audience how we operate and telling our story in a way that makes them truly feel like part of the experience.”

Applications for B Social funding were reviewed and assessed by a volunteer panel of judges consisting of:

  • Colleen Young, founder, #hcsmca (Health Care Social Media Canada)
  • Bill Pascal, CTO, Canadian Medical Association
  • Nicole Filiatrault, Digital Media Communicator, Canada Health Infoway
  • Ann Fuller, Director of Communications, Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario
  • Richard Booth RN, MScN, Doctoral Candidate, University of Waterloo
  • Elaine Huesing, Publisher, Healthcare Information Management & Communications Canada

“We received a number of compelling and thoughtful applications for funding,” notes Michael Martineau, B Sharp Technologies’ Vice President of Sales and Marketing.  “We were particularly impressed by Quinte Pediatrics willingness to experiment with various forms of social media and their commitment to making it an integral part of their practice.”

Runners up for the first round of B Social funding are: Alberta Caregivers (albertacaregivers.org), Breast Feeding Inc. (breastfeedinginc.ca), and Bridges Community Health Centre (bridgeschc.ca).
